Hugh Binning (1627–1653), regent in philosophy at Glasgow and then minister of Govan, preached these sermons on the opening questions of the Shorter Catechism to his congregation; they were printed after his death, at Glasgow in 1659, with an epistle “To the Reader” on his life signed by Patrick Gillespie. The text here is the fifth impression, “carefully corrected & amended”, which EEBO-TCP transcribed (its title page is dated 1666 and its colophon 1667); the first edition is on archive.org (bim_early-english-books-1641-1700_the-common-principles-of_binning-hugh_1659). Each entry is one of its twenty-five sermons, its
textMarkdown, beginning with the Scripture it preaches on; it is titled by the printing’s heading where it has one (001, 003) and else by the sermon’s heading in the contents, which give the seventh and eighth one heading. Itsquestionsare the catechism’s it treats, by its subject: Binning prints none of them, and goes as far as question 20 (the covenant of grace, in the last sermon, on 1 Tim. 1:15); none treats question 14, what sin is, apart from the fall and Adam’s first sin. “To the Reader” and the contents areprose/; the title page and the colophon are left out. Imported from EEBO-TCP A28171 byscripts/import-tcp.mjs(--kind commentary --on wsc --sermons --italic-j), keeping its spelling and its marks for what it couldn’t read (•, 〈◊〉, 〈 in non-Latin alphabet 〉 for Greek and Hebrew), but where the scan was read.EMENDATIONS.mdgives the conventions and every correction. The film shows pp. 244–245 twice.- On
