Gilbert Burnet (1643–1715), Bishop of Salisbury, published his exposition of the Articles in 1699 (Wing B5791), written, its preface says, at the late Archbishop’s (Tillotson’s) desire and read by him and Queen Mary in draft, and dedicated it to William III; this is its second edition, “corrected”, of 1700. It takes the Articles one by one, each a discourse that opens with the article in the printing’s black letter and goes through its heads, the Scripture, the Fathers and the controversies with Rome, the Socinians and others. Each entry is an article, on all of
articles1571’s paragraphs in it, titled by its heading without “ARTICLE I.”; itstextis Markdown, the article as Burnet prints it (the English text of 1700, not the 1571 printing’s) a block quote, his margin references footnotes. The dedication to the King, the preface, the Articles in Latin and the Introduction (on the Articles’ making, the subscription, and collations of the Corpus Christi manuscripts and the printing of 1571) areprose/; the title page, the half-title and the table of contents are left out. Imported from EEBO-TCP A30349 byscripts/import-tcp.mjs(--kind commentary --on articles1571 --sermons --italic-j), keeping its spelling and its marks for what it couldn’t read (•, 〈◊〉, ▪, and 〈 in non-Latin alphabet 〉 for Greek), but where the scan was read.EMENDATIONS.mdgives the conventions (the TCP’s I for the printing’s italic and black-letter J, and its U for the black letter’s V) and every correction. The scan is EEBO’s film of the Huntington Library’s copy, the one the TCP transcribed, page for page; the first edition is on archive.org as Google’s scan (anexpositionthi00ivgoog).- On
