Notes

The Synod of Dort’s judgment, in Latin, on the five articles of the Remonstrants (1610), adopted on 23 April 1619 and confessed with the Heidelberg Catechism and the Belgic Confession (belgic1561) as the Three Forms of Unity. This is the English of the Reformed Dutch Church in America, as printed in its Constitution (Philadelphia, 1840, pp. 60–75), the printing heidelberg follows. Each head of doctrine is a chapter, titled with its head and its subject, and each article a paragraph, <head>.<article>. The third and fourth heads, which the Synod treated as one and printed as one (“Third and Fourth Heads of Doctrine”), are chapter 3, and there is no chapter 4, so that the fifth head is chapter 5 and every article’s id is the number it is cited by: “III/IV, 12” is 3.12, “V, 3” is 5.3. Article I.7’s two printed paragraphs are one paragraph. This printing gives the articles only: the Rejection of Errors that follows each head in the Synod’s Latin and in the Dutch (the conclusion still speaks of “the rejection of the errors”) is not in it, and is not here; added from another printing, each head’s rejections could follow its articles (1.19–1.27 for the first head’s nine), beginning as printed (“Rejection I”), until the articles kind of #19 numbers them R1, R2. The Conclusion, with the subscription and the list of the delegations, is prose/conclusion. The printing quotes Scripture in quotation marks, with a reference before or after; each reference is the proof of the segment that ends with the words it cites. One that introduces the words stays in the text (“according to the words of the apostle. Rom. iii. 19, “that every mouth…”); one that follows them as a citation is taken out. Its italics and spacing before stops are not kept; its spelling, capitals and punctuation are, but where a letter or a stop is wanting or a stop is wrong, and where the scan is damaged (I.18), which confessions/dort1619/EMENDATIONS.md lists with every reference and how it was placed.
