Notes

John Flavel’s catechetical exercises at Dartmouth in 1688, printed after his death (1691) for Thomas Cockerill in 1692, with a preface and an epistle to the reader by Increase Mather. The preface says Flavel finished only to the second petition of the Lord’s Prayer: the last five questions (103–107) “were done by a ruder hand”. Each of the Shorter Catechism’s questions is an entry, with its answer, and Flavel’s questions and answers, his “inferences” among them, under it; question 4’s attributes, and the parts into which questions 20, 22, 28, 36, 37, 38, 86 and 96 are divided, are entries of their own on the same question. Questions 8 and 46–48 have none; 17 and 18, 40 and 41, 43 and 44, and the commandments’ questions, share one. The printing sets its proofs in the text, each reference after the words it proves and the verse quoted after it: here the reference is the segment’s proofs, and the verse a segment without. Imported from EEBO-TCP A39662 by scripts/import-tcp.mjs (--kind commentary), its spelling kept, and the TCP’s • for what it couldn’t read filled from the scan, all but four (EMENDATIONS.md); not proofread against the scan word by word. The printing’s pages run from 112 to 121 with nothing wanting (page 112’s catchword is page 121’s first word, and its signature I follows H), though the film’s note says pages 113–120 are lacking.
