Notes

The General Baptists’ confession of twenty-five articles, subscribed at London in March 1660 by forty elders, deacons and brethren “in the behalf of themselves, and many others”, and presented to Charles II that year. This is its first printing, which Thomason dated 15 March 1659[/60]. The broadside “Lately presented to King Charles the Second” (Wing B4560, ESTC R212523, EEBO-TCP A77416), which Thomason dated 26 July 1660, is a later setting with its own spelling; it adds 1 John 5:7 to article 7, Thomas Grantham to the subscribers, and “Owned and approved by more than 20000.” The printing sets its references in the running text; in the articles they are the segments’ proofs. What follows article 25 is prose/, the conclusion and the subscribers. The text began as EEBO-TCP’s A77414 and was then proofread word by word against the scan, every reference with it, and made to read as printed, misprints and all but where a reference is impossible; each paragraph gives its page and leaf. Every departure from A77414 and from the printing, and how its references were made proofs, is in confessions/standard1660/EMENDATIONS.md. The PDF is EEBO’s film of Thomason’s copy (E.1017[14]), from ProQuest’s Early Modern Collection, with ProQuest’s credit line taken off each page: the text was read on it, and it is sharper. The Angus Library (Regent’s Park College, Oxford) shows its copy (1.k.19(2)), of the same setting, free in colour photographs (its page, PDF). EEBO’s film of Thomason’s broadside (669.f.25[65]), which the text was checked against, is ours too, from ProQuest the same way. The National Library of Ireland has another copy of the broadside, which it shows free (LO Folder 7/20).
