Alexander Whyte (1836–1921), then minister of Free St George’s, Edinburgh, wrote it for the Handbooks for Bible Classes and Private Students, the series he edited with Marcus Dods; its Prefatory Note (
prose/) calls it “somewhat more the character of a Catena than that of an original Commentary”, his notes and the writers he quotes from carrying large Bible classes through the Catechism. The imprint is undated; it is the first edition of 1883 (it quotes a speech of 28 June 1883, and the series’ list names Lindsay’s Mark of 1883 as ready and Stalker’s Life of St. Paul, of 1884, as coming shortly). The printing sets each question and answer with the Assembly’s proof texts, their verses quoted, before Whyte’s commentary on it; those are the Shorter Catechism’s own (wsc), so they, and the Assembly’s note on the first answer, are left out, and an entry is Whyte’s commentary alone, in Markdown: his notes on the answer’s words (in bold, as he sets them), his “Uses” and his “Questions” for study, each a heading over a numbered list, verse set off as a block quote, and his references to Scripture as he prints them. Where he prints several questions together and comments on them at once, they are one entry: 8–9, 43–44, 45–48, 49–52, 53–56, 57–58, 63–66, 67–69, 70–72, 73–75, 76–78 and 79–81, so 82 entries cover the 107 questions. The scan is Princeton Theological Seminary’s copy, at archive.org (catalogued there, wrongly, as 1856); the University of Toronto’s (commentaryonshor00whytuoft) is the same issue.- On
