Notes

David Dickson (c. 1583–1663), professor of divinity at Glasgow and Edinburgh, lectured in Latin on the Westminster Confession (Praelectiones in Confessionem Fidei); George Sinclair (d. 1696), who signs its dedication to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, published them in English in 1684, after his death: the earliest commentary on the Confession. It goes through the Confession’s thirty-three chapters, asks of each its truths (“Is…? Yes”), then the errors they refute (“Well then, do not the Socinians err…? Yes”), and confutes them with numbered reasons. Each entry is a chapter, on all of wcf1646’s paragraphs in it, titled by its heading as printed; each of Dickson’s questions is an item, its answer and references the segments, and the questions after it in turn (the errors, “By what reasons are they confuted?” and the reasons) items under it. The labels “Question I.”, “Quest. II.” are left out (the printing numbers two questions of chapter 23 “VI.”). A reference is a segment’s proofs; one given only as a chapter, its book named in the sentence (“as the Prophet Daniel hath foretold; chap. 9. 24, 26.”), and the Apocrypha’s, stay in the text. The epistles, the commendatory verses and the list of heretics are prose/; the title page is left out. Imported from EEBO-TCP A35959 by scripts/import-tcp.mjs (--kind commentary --on wcf1646 --italic-j), keeping its spelling and its marks for what it couldn’t read (•, 〈◊〉, ▪, and 〈 in non-Latin alphabet 〉 for Greek), but where the scan was read. EMENDATIONS.md gives the conventions (the TCP sets I for the printing’s italic J, here J) and every correction. The scan is EEBO’s film of the copy the TCP transcribed, page for page (with pp. 2–3 and 290–291 filmed twice).
