By Thomas Lye (1621–1684), ejected from All Hallows Lombard Street in 1662. It sets out each of the Assembly’s answers, then draws it out into numbered propositions, each proved by a text or more printed at large, and divides the whole into thirty parts, a day’s reading each, marked in the margin. Each entry is the question as Lye prints it and its answer, and its day is the entry’s
part. A lead (“Mans chief end is,”) is an item without a question, its propositions items without a question under it; a proposition’s references are itsproofs, and its proof as printed, the reference and the verse, itsnote. The verses are as Lye prints them, not the KJV’s, and the words he sets in another letter to show where a text’s force lies are not marked. The earliest printing known is “London, Printed in the Year 1672” (archive.org,bim_early-english-books-1641-1700_the-assemblies-shorter-c_lye-thomas_1672). This text is the printing of 1674 as EEBO-TCP transcribed it (A49498), and the scan is EEBO’s film of it, dark, and cut off at the outer margin, where the TCP’s gaps are kept as it has them. Its “Plain Directions for the more profitable use of this Book” areprose/directions; its half-title and Thomas Parkhurst’s list of books are left out.
