Caspar Olevianus (1536–1587), minister at Heidelberg and with Zacharias Ursinus one of the Heidelberg Catechism’s authors, expounded the Apostles’ Creed in catechising sermons, gathered in Latin and dedicated to the Elector Palatine Frederick III at Heidelberg on 19 March 1576; John Fielde (d. 1588), the London puritan, put them into English and dedicated them to Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick. Olevianus reads the Creed as the articles of God’s free covenant with the faithful, in four parts (the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost, the Church). Each entry is an article as the printing heads it with the Creed’s words (“In God the father”, “Crucified”), with the sections he sets after it (testimonies out of the Prophets and Apostles, the meaning, the fruits), its
textMarkdown, those sections##headings and the margin notes footnotes; itsclausesthe clause it expounds, so that clause 4 has five, and itspartthe printing’s heading of the part, where it prints one. The first entry, the introduction before the first article (the kingdom of Christ, the covenant, what faith is, the rules for every article), is on all twelve clauses; the second, “I beleeue in God the father almightie maker of heauen and earth”, which treats the Trinity and the Son’s and the Holy Ghost’s Godhead at length, is on clauses 1, 2 and 8. The two dedications, Olevianus’s epistle to the youth and the errata areprose/; the title page is left out. Imported from EEBO-TCP A08483 byscripts/import-tcp.mjs(--kind commentary --on apostles --sermons), from a copy of the TEI laid out by the articles, keeping its spelling and its marks for what it couldn’t read (〈◊〉, 〈…〉, and 〈 in non-Latin alphabet 〉 for Greek), but where the scan was read; the errata are not made in the text.EMENDATIONS.mdgives the layout, the conventions and every correction. The scan is EEBO’s film of the Huntington Library’s copy, which the TCP transcribed, page for page; archive.org files it among the books of 1641–1700. A Xerox of a film of the same copy is also on archive.org (exsymb00olev).- On
