Notes

The Creed of Morning Prayer in the Book of Common Prayer of 1662, as its first printing has it, in its twelve articles as catechisms expound it (the Heidelberg’s questions 26–58, and An Orthodox Catechism’s after them). The printing is black letter; its long s is printed s, and its u and v as we write them. The 1693 printing (Wing B3687, EEBO-TCP A28758) has the same words, but “Catholic”. Its received form is dated to about 700, from the Old Roman Creed of the second and third centuries. In the United Kingdom the Prayer Book’s text is the Crown’s, under its letters patent; elsewhere it is in the public domain.
