1. A Lawful Oath, is a part of Religious Worship;a wherein the Person swearing in Truth, Righteousness, and Judgment,b solemnly calleth God to witness what he sweareth, and to judg him according to the Truth, or Falseness thereof.c And we are to swear by no other Name, but by the Name of God only,d when we are called before a lawful Magistrate, upon a lawful Matter, warranted by God’s holy Word;e and an Oath is to be taken in the plain and common sence of the words, without Equivocation, or mental Reservation, in a solemn and reverent using of God’s Holy Name;f and such an Oath, we believe all Christians, when lawfully called thereunto by the Magistrate, may take.g But the foolish monastical Vows of Papists, and all idle and vain Swearing, is an abominable, and wicked prophaning of the holy Name of God.h
