Thomas Rogers (c. 1553–1616), rector of Horringer and chaplain to Archbishop Bancroft, to whom it is dedicated: the first commentary on the Thirty-Nine Articles. It revises his The English Creede (part 1, 1585; part 2, 1587; EEBO-TCP A68668 and A10957). Its text is headed “The Catholike Doctrine, beleeued and professed in the Church of England”, the title of later printings and of the Parker Society’s edition (1854; archive.org, catholicdoctrine00roge). Each article is printed, then “analised into propositions”, and each proposition proved from Scripture and from the confessions of the reformed churches (the Harmony of Confessions), and the errors and adversaries it condemns listed. Each entry is an article, on all of articles1571’s paragraphs of it; its items are the article as Rogers prints it, the list of propositions, and each proposition, with its proof and its errors under it, each a heading with its paragraphs. Every margin note is a segment’s: the Bible references it gives are its proofs, and the note as printed its note where it says more (the verses quoted, a confession, a father); a note citing a commentary on a verse (“Test. Rhem. an. Rom. 8.17.”) gives none. The small figures that number the propositions in an article’s text are left out. The dedication is prose/preface and the canons of 1604 printed after it prose/canons; the title page, the table of titles and pages and the printer’s errata are left out. Imported from EEBO-TCP A10958 by scripts/import-tcp.mjs (--kind commentary --on articles1571), and proofread against the scan, EEBO’s film of the printing, which films pp. 6–7 and 206–209 twice. The TCP’s gaps elsewhere are kept as it has them. Its readings, conventions and corrections are in commentaries/rogers1607/EMENDATIONS.md.
