Benjamin Beddome (1717–1795), Baptist minister at Bourton-on-the-Water, wrote it at his friends’ urging, “in imitation of Mr. Henry’s” (
henry1703), his preface (prose/preface, dated 27 February 1752) says: he breaks each answer of the Baptist Catechism (bc1695) into short questions answered Yes or No, each proved by the words of a verse and its reference. The first edition (London: John Ward, 1752) is the British Library’s copy at Google Books; the second, corrected (Bristol: W. Pine, 1776), is on archive.org (bim_eighteenth-century_a-scriptural-exposition-_beddome-benjamin_1776_3). This text follows neither, but the American edition of 1849, with J. L. Reynolds’s introduction (left out here): its “call the sabbath honorable and honor him” (question 65) is 1849’s, where 1776 has “honourable and honour”. In places its spelling is modern where 1849’s isn’t (“practiced” for “practised”, “installment” for “instalment”). Each entry is one of the catechism’s questions; the printing’s question and answer at its head, the catechism’s own, are left out. Each paragraph (marked § in the printing) is an item, its first question, with the paragraph’s other questions under it; each answer (“Yes.”, “No.”) is a segment, and the verse that proves it another, its reference the proofs, asIsaiah 44:6for the printing’s “Isa. xliv. 6.”; its six footnotes are those segments’ notes. Who made the text, and from what, is unknown: it came into this repository in July 2026, as bc1695’sbeddome/, and has not been proofread against the scan. Its references are as it had them, and some were misread from the printing’s: “Psa. cx. 1.” is “Exodus 1” in questions 9 and 31, and twelve name only a chapter; and some sixty name a verse other than the one whose words are quoted (“My counsel shall stand”, Isaiah 46:10, is “Isaiah 45:10” in question 11), whether by the printing’s slips or the transcription’s isn’t known. /api/v1 answers it asbc1695’sexpositionstoo, the shape it had there; the scan is Google’s, of the University of Virginia’s copy, also at Google Books.- On
